Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period is right around the corner. From October 15 through December 7, 2026, Medicare beneficiaries can review their current coverage and make changes for 2027.
Even if you are happy with your current Medicare plan, it is still a good idea to review it each year. Plans can change their premiums, copays, prescription drug coverage, provider networks and extra benefits. A plan that worked well for you this year may not be the best fit next year.
What Can You Do During Medicare Open Enrollment?
During the Annual Enrollment Period, you may be able to:
- Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan
- Return to Original Medicare from a Medicare Advantage plan
- Change from one Medicare Advantage plan to another
- Enroll in, change or drop a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan
Changes made during this enrollment period generally take effect January 1, 2027.
Why Should You Review Your Medicare Coverage?
Medicare plans are not one-size-fits-all. The right choice depends on your healthcare needs, prescriptions, preferred doctors, budget and the benefits that matter most to you.
Before renewing your current coverage, it is worth checking:
- Are your doctors and preferred hospitals still in the plan’s network?
- Are all your prescriptions still covered?
- Have your premium, deductible or copays changed?
- Are there restrictions or prior-authorization requirements that could affect your care?
- Would another available plan better match your needs and budget?
It is easy to focus only on the monthly premium, but the lowest-premium plan is not always the least expensive option overall. Prescription costs, copays, provider access and maximum out-of-pocket limits can make a major difference during the year.
